SMT kitting help, losing reels, can't find them, tracking parts located in saved setups, etc | 23 May, 2021

Hello, I recently became the SMT supervisor where I work. I have experience in much of the other areas but haven't actually done SMT work myself.

An ongoing issue that I'm having is parts/reels related. If the person responsible for kitting starts getting the parts together for the setup/operators, we find that often not all the parts are in their inventory location and has to waste time trying to find them. Often they are in saved setups, currently running, tore down and waiting to be placed back in inventory shelf, and so on. This makes the employee have to run around and try and find them.

Does anyone know of a good system, maybe a way to do it in excel, or whatever, to keep track of present locations of all parts? Where once the job is done and the part is now located back to inventory that this is done quickly though a scanning system of some sort?

Can you have the SMT lines or feeder carts as "stock locations" on your system and issue them to that location? then at least when you go to your pick list you'll know where it is. That's assuming you can do this quickly.

The good solution is to adopt ERP system and barcode tracking for everything you have in inventory. If not, SMT supervisor will keep super complicated excel sheets to track what is where..... Or.. you can request all to be kitted together and confirmed from kitting person, before it goes to setup crew.

This may seem off the wall but I've seen it work in the past. It is a visual management system without the need for barcodes or spreadsheets. Obtain quantities of different colored clothespins. When a reel is taken out of inventory, attach a colored clothespin to the stock location and mark your setup cart with that same color. You will have different colored clothespins for each job that is currently being run, that needs put away, that is a saved setup, that is staged next to run, etc. These can be listed on a whiteboard. Job A is red, job B is yellow, etc. When the parts need put away, remove the clothespin in the stock area for each reel that is put away. You may have three or more colors on each stock location meaning that the same part is out on three different setups. If you know that the blue pin is for the next setup, you know where to go. It isn't perfect but it will narrow down where the part is. If you need something more exact, use the setup sheet for a particular job in addition to the job colors. It will show you what part number goes in which feeder slot.

Welcome to SMT! I highly recommend exploring the process of adding unique reel identifiers to your reels and tracking locations, or even kitting, using these barcodes. You may also see this referred to as serializing or license plating. Implementing is less work than it appears to be on the front-end and there are numerous benefits to be gained in the areas of inventory control even if you aren't seeking full traceability. These days the supplier of your pick and place machines will likely have software that can assign reel ID's and help you manage inventory. There are also several third party suppliers who focus on PCBA inventory control, traceability, scheduling, and more. As you start to explore options I suggest looking into Optel MES. This software can be scaled to easily match individual customer needs and expanded later. I have worked with numerous PCBA/SMT software packages over my years in the industry and have seen Optel installed successfully in both small and large factories, including my own.
