Component wastage

Component wastage | 21 September, 1999

Does anyone have any figures on what % extra compnents should be supplied on chip components for a particular product build. Typicaly there is wastage due to dropout in loading, 1st board build and machine rejections. Is there any industry standard that is used?

Many thanks

We assume a 3% scrap rate on all chip components.

Deon Response:

Hi Robert,

We in the past have typically asked for 3%-4% on all tape and reel passives, 2% on all tubed actives, and .5%-1% on active components on trays. This has worked out well for us. Especially since components have dropped so much in price. Most reasonable customers do not have a problem with this. It is not worth wasting valuable time going through the hassle of filling out shotage repots and paperwork for a few extra parts. Especially if you return excess when finished with the kit. There are exceptions on the high dollar parts so I would be flexible on these. I would also include this information on the quote. Hope this helps.|

Why assume? Why not measure actual attrition at the machine work centers?
