What is the naming conventions for SMT Packages? | 21 September, 2021

Pretty new SMT process engineer here. Context: we are using a MyData100 and using MYcenter software with it. Most package naming conventions only define outer area/foot print dimensions. However, I do not know of any convention for further package definition.

Currently our design engineers (we are a high mix, low volume OEM) define alternate parts if its the "same package" but that only fits for foot print, not height of the component which is a MASSIVE difference when it comes to pick-n-place programming? Am I missing something here?

How do you differentiate different packages, including package height, as seperate items?

Your Mydata should have come with a myriad of preprogrammed packages, specifying height (ex. 0805-05, 0805 components with height of 0.5mm).

Yes, and while it did, its been around longer than we have had any sort of process engineers. While the package naming scheme, or lack there of, is a mess. I am mostly curious if there is any other identifiers or naming conventions besides specific machine MFGs and other ways to tell what package is to be used other than looking up every single part number and creating thousands of custom packages since packages defined by component manufacturers also are not specific on this detail.

If there isn't really any good answer I will just have to deal with it but I am really curious if there is?

Just come up with a system that works well for you, that's all that really matters.

Attached is a good starting point. We also have Mydata and have had many different people providing names. Some used standard units, other metric. Try to stick with all metric and use prefixes that match up with the component type and pin count if needed, i.e 0402-04, BGA-LeadCount-LLWW-HH-Pitch, SO-8-LLWW-HH-Pitch etc.

You, my good sir, are amazing. We'll probably have to do some adjusting/adapting but this was exactly what I was looking for. Did you/your company come up with this or was there another original source?

No, found it somewhere on the Web but it is a great chart for starters.

If you like that one then you might also like this one. https://www.topline.tv/products.cfm A few lifetimes ago,I would always make sure I had a copy of the Topline brochure. They make dummy parts and their borchure had them organised nicely.

You will have to sign up for this one and it is not as easy to use but it is a standard. https://www.jedec.org/sites/default/files/docs/JESD30E.pdf

not sure if there is anything else on this page that you might like but it is worth a look. https://www.pcb-3d.com/tutorials/ipc-7351b-naming-convention-for-surface-mount-device-3d-models-and-footprints/
