Part Rework stencils | 14 February, 2022

Hello all,

we have a laser machine in house(we bought it to cut foam) that looks pretty accurate. We are considering to start cutting our own repair stencils, so I am researching into the material side of it. Would you recommend what kind of material will be good for rework stencil?

What about katpon? One per use only, but it will self adhere to the PCB.

I have used Kapton stencils before. The only issue was they don't last nearly as well as the steel ones. For rework if Circuit medic had the stencil in stock we would buy those. If not there was a stencil shop that would make them from Kapton.

I don't know these guys but they advertise here. https://smtnet.com/company/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_company&company_id=48600&component=catalog&catalog_id=21339

I don't know what material Circuit Medic uses.

What you don't want to use is brass foil. I was told a long time ago that brass stencils were cheaper because they were made with a chemical process. And that they produced a toxic gas when cut with a laser. I suggested to the salesman that, that was what temps were for. (just kidding)

And you can see at least a little through them. That can be a slight advantage as well.

Thank you guys. So far we have Kapton and Mylar on our list. If you can come with more, will be appreciated. We will do the whole study after we have enough candidate materials and I will share with you results.
