Substitute parts

Do any SMTneters out there have a good solution to substitute SMT parts that you are willing to share? I presume all of us have the issue where purchasing wants to buy "the same part" from a different vendor. While the part may be the same electrical, it requires a program change on the SMT equipment. The differences can be size, shape of body, shape of leads, packaging orientation , etc. Of course, it's not too hard to switch vendors if you know about it, but it's the switching back and forth without notice that presents a problem.

Any good ideas out there? We use Fuji equipment. Do you know if various manufacturers of equipment are more tolerant to part variations?

Purchasing looks at the comp. specs and only sees whats there on the BOM. 50 uF cap, 50 volt, electrolytic. However, the machine vision system doesn't give a crap about about those specs. What are the physical parameters is whats important. X,Y and Z and lead element info! I had the same dilema until I brough everyone from purchasing down to the floor for "SMT Orientation day". State your needs clearly. State the reprocussions on missed schedules if deviations occur. If your parts flip flop back and forth between two "sizes" keep both PD's in your program (F4G). Or add to to your Unicam shape library. Then you won't have to keep re-inventing those PD's.

Also, keep in mind some machines are "friendlier" to quick process changes than others.

Some customers will not allow you to change from specified manufacturers due to qualification requirements. For example; on a capacitor, the customer might specify that the manufacturer must be XYZ capacitor company. Purchasing can buy from anyone as long as the manufacturer is XYZ. If the manufacturer is specified, then deviations or ECN's must be done to allow the use of other manufacturers parts. It's even more important with active components.
