How to start a selective soldering process

I'm planning to introduce selective point-to-point soldering for pwb. This is due to various needs: PIHs assy on double IR, for example. I think the most suitable solution is a point-to-point soldering, 'cause we're still having small lot/many type production. I'd be glad to receive some general advices or suggestions about the real effectivness of single-point soldering made by a "nozzle pot". Which clearance around PIH pin? Is it the pwb thickness of some concern?

Are you ure that you cannot use a "pin-in-paste" process? That has worked well for us. We have looked at selective soldering but have not yet bought anything. I recommend you talk to Air-Vac Engineering, Pillarhouse, and Exselect. One of our engineers has had overall good experience with Pillarhouse while working at another company. Maybe others here can recommend additional equipment suppliers.

One of the mentioned selective solder vendors touted how extensive their equipment was used at this factory. When I aske the ME where the equipment was, his response was "we got rid of them, too much rework..." They're now using selective solder palets on their flow solder machine. Interesting...

I own an AirVac SRM12 that I like a lot but use in primarily for connectors and sockets.
