Visual Inspection after SMD Placement and After Wave Solder

I'm looking into vision inspection equipment to automatically inspect SMD placement and solder joint quality. Does anyone have any recommendations or know of any commonly used equipment? Do other manufacturers use vision systems at their inspection stations?

Can 'teach' an assembly in about 30 minutes with an experienced operator on a mature system.

HP has an AOI which reportedly is strong on joint inspection, they are beginning to do marking inspection. They claim less than a day to 'teach'.

Most of them will tell you that they will do what you want to do. BE VERY CAREFUL. Putting AOI all over your plant is very costly. Determine what it is that you want to inspect to improve your process then find someone that can do that. My recomendation is don't fall into the trap of trying to finding bad quality. Find bad processes and fix them.

Do other manufacturers use vision systems at their inspection stations? | | Thanks in advance, | | John Sims | John, about 1 year ago, I was looking into AOI systems, and I was put off by the prices of even an entry level system. I believe this was due to the camera technology involved and obviously the number of cameras required.

However, recently I came across a system from a company called DiagnoSYS. They have an entry level system for �15K. This is based on "scanner" tech as oppoesed to cameras therefore most of the cost is associated with the image processing software. It is basically an automated comparascope and allows on-screen image zoom etc; It compares the "Golden" stored image with the assembly under test and highlights differences on screen.
