Proto BGA Equipment

I'm looking for some equipment to build proto and small volume assemblies with BGA components on them. I'm thinking about purchasing a rework machine to do the proto and small volume runs and purchase assembly equipment later.

1. Does this make sense? 2. Any recommendations on the equipment?

I know that you are hoping to save money by using a rework station but you might also look at entry level automated equipment. My company would be happy to provide a smaller, entry level reflow system.

Any recommendations on the equipment? | | thanks, | Steve | Steve: This is sound. Just remember that you'll need to control your soldering process to get satisfactory and reliable solder connections. Some rework stations provide the capability for controlling and monitoring process better than others. Finally, inspecting BGA solder connections is not as straight foreward as other solder connections. Good luck. Dave F

Several of our customers use our Summit series equipment for this purpose. Our rework stations are used in proto labs to prove manufacturability. Consider it a low volume, semiautomatic pick and place and selective soldering reflow oven. Some low end placement systems are not capable of doing fine pitch or uBGA. A rework system can do it all but is much slower. It will all depend on your volume and your component requirements. a low cost Oven will also work great as long as you have placed the components on correctly. For Medium volume, Rework systems can also be used to supliment a low accuracy assembly line where all difficult components are added after the reflow oven using rework procedures. This will reduce the need of having a pick and place system that has .002 placement acuracy and repeatability.
