OSP/OCC PROCESS COMPATIBILITY | 6 March, 1999

Where I'm located, we call it OCC. By any other name would it smell/stink as sweet?

I need to know, though it's been overworked, who has experience with OSP and its compatibility with water and IPA no-clean, VOC no-clean, and device adhesives (possible contamination issues). Someone out there, besides our advanced electronic assembly design council and IPC has all the answers. Who are you and what is your name?

Earl,

I have some volume experience with no-clean and OSP's. My experience only goes through 1995, so consider that fact. I worked at a shop where I had customers who were into two different OSP's. One wanted down and dirty; Sealbrite. The other wanted the latest and greatest; Entec.

I did substantial paste and adhesive testing. I got my best results with Loctite 3609 and AIM no-clean. They both did a fabulous job on both types of OSP's. Neither product required a wave process, so I did not use a no-clean in the wave.

Amacon's adhesive was also a strong contender....... but the 3609 and a positive displacement pump eliminated any stringing / excess issues I had experienced previously.

These were both commercial products. The Sealbrite was used on an industrial lighting product--IPC 610 class 1; the Entec on computer / peripheral gear--class 2.
