Attachment of Flex circuit to rigid PCB

Attachment of Flex circuit to rigid PCB | 6 March, 1999

I need to attach / assemble Flexible circuit onto Rigid PCB without use of any connectors i.e. fingers / tracks of Flexible circuit are to be attached / directly to the fingers of the Rigid Glass Epoxy PCB.

I need info on the alternate processes, equipement, consumables and the sourcing info for equipment and consumables. Would also appreciate any technical write-up on this subject..

Thanks for help.

VJ,

I have been faced with the same problem. The method that has worked for me was to use a hot bar reflow method to fascilitate the attachment of the Flex. We are using a Unitek hot bar reflow system that is working well for the application. The key issue for this means of attachment is the solder volume present on the pads prior to the flex attachment vs. the amount of solder required for an acceptable joint. As far as documentation, Thomas Stearns has published some papers on Flex Assembly. He is somewhat of a Flex Guru.

Hope This Helps,
