Spray fluxer vs.Foam fluxer | 9 November, 1998

I need to find out the benefits about having a spray fluxer.Right now we are using a foam fluxer on our electrovert wavesolder. We are thinking about investing in a spray fluxer and I want to know if anyone has used a spray fluxer and if any problems may exist about a spray fluxer vs. a foam fluxer. Any response will be greatly and deeply appreciated...

We have gone that route with our Electrovert machine. A lot depends on what problems you are trying to address. Spray fluxers will eliminate some maintenance and safety issues. The flux deposition can be controlled easily. They also work better with voc free fluxes. You will never have to buy thinner again....But Spray fluxers tend to be more problematic in creating a mess. Reliability is also a problem with some units. Be careful to check out references before buying.

If you are using OA flux, keep foaming. Their solids content is so high and their organic acid is so aggressive that, even though some flux manufacturers have models beefed up specifically for OA, they are still very problematic.

If you are using a low-solids (no clean) flux, spraying is much easier. No more titrations by your operators to worry about and very repeatable deposition. I will email you a copy of a Nepcon paper that compares the two leading spray fluxers.

Take a look at the sono-Tek Ultrasonic flux Spraying System. Good people to work with. www.sono-tek.com

Mike,

We retrofitted all of our waves with USI spray fluxers. We are running no-clean on 4 of our waves, and OA 2331-ZX, reduced specific gravity to .825, on the other 2 With OA you must buy a special spray head to accomadate higher pressure and larger particles, we haven't had any problems with any of them. I really recommend spray fluxers that are ultrasonic, such as USI. The ultrasonics atomize the flux in turn forms into a mist which is directed by air onto the PCB. A second air stream inserts an upward velocity that helps ensure good coverage. The results are really good. If your interested in more info on USI email me and I'll send you my rep.s phone number etc.

I think everyone here would say do it. Because of evaporation and in my opinion, openess to contamination, foam fluxers are a pain to maintain specific gravities. Plus we all know that the electronic density controllers don't work worth a darn.

I buy 6 spray system by ERSA (http://www.ersa.de)in new solder wawe but also in retrofit. We had a very good experience whith this system. We used INTERFLUX has low residues flux. (IF2005M) This is a belgium company.

Good luck
