Siemens: Slow Line Computer | 25 August, 1998

We are having a lot of problems with the Line Computer Speed on our Siemens Siplace Line. This seems to be a common problem when many different jobs, partnumbers, and package forms are stored on the line computer. Please let me know if you are having similiar problems. Please let me know how you manage this, if at all. Bill.

Bill, Having storage problems? Ditto.... We have enhanced the CPUs memory, added a larger hard drive, ect. and it is still slow. The official line from tech. support is "Don't store so much on the line computer". We must have 250ish programs available at any given time of the day or night so this presents a problem for us. At this time we are just living with it. Sorry I am not a lot of help, but you are not alone. Robert

Someone should try to install the software on something more advanced than the Siemens Pentium 90. Bill, why don't you want to be the first one ? Please let us know if good or bad.

I have talked about it with a couple of Siemens guys, but they don't really want to support using something other than there product. Bill.

Please E me @bwest@paramit.com and let me know if you are interested. | Bill. Hello Bill, Long time no communication. Hey I was interested in your slow line computer issues. Would it be possible for you to give more details? I would be interested in finding out if you are experiencing the slow LC during reboot and if so what is your mode of rebooting the LC? Are your powering down often due to your normal procedure? Do you find that you have to power down due to SW lockup and if so have you looked into the possible reasons this may be occuring? Do you operate on a central data storage system, how many lines are on the central data storage? Do you presently have a method or process to do house keeping, archieving data which will not be used any time soon? You may also want to look into a UNIX script to use periodically to eliminate files which are generated in the normal day to day scheduling of the programs. Also If you have a large number of GF files or BE files you may want to delete any files not currently being used. You may want to create some UNIX scripts to produce text files which can later be "Sifted" using a simple QBASIC program to extract the data you may desire. There are quite a few questions and areas that I personally would need answered/clarified. Drop me a line or give me a call and we can discuss further. Ray (512) 823-6737

Robert- How many lines do you have? How are they configured? Have you given any thought to central data storage? Are you programming at the line computer or do you make use of the VMPS system? There are ways other than a direct hardware upgrade to allow your system to more efficient. Drop me a line.

Thanks

Ray
