Soldering Temperature

Soldering Temperature | 13 July, 1998

What is the range of temperature at the tip of most soldering irons? I was told that 90% of tips operate at between 430 and 460 F. Can someone verify this for me? I need this info to recommend the proper soldering aids for repair and rework. Thanks, Frank

Ask for Andy Price. These guys specialize in rework. They perform a variety of circuit repair services from mass removal of passives up through BGA and maybe even Flip Chip. Ask for Andy Price. He's a good guy and knows the rework game. He'll give you a more definitive answer. In all honesty, I think the temperatures you listed are low. Maybe I have some dinosaurs or something but mine are up around 600 degrees. They have a web site too. www.circuitnet.com Regards, Justin Medernach

IPC-FA-251 section 5.2 recommends a tip temperature of 600-650F. Hope this helps!
