Nickle plating for SS Metal switch...

Nickle plating for SS Metal switch... | 18 December, 1997

I am designing an SMT pad for a ss metal switch. Finished copper thickness is .0014 and nickle-plating originally is 150 millionths. Initial testing yields 100,000 to 150,000 switches before intermitent failures (copper is reached.) I want 500,000 switch life at least. QUESTIONS: 1) How thick can nickle plating go? 2) Will adding silver over the nickle yield the switch life I seek? -T.V.

Tom, Flashing a noble metal over the nickel should give you the life you are looking for. We currently produce a product with that exact configuration. eg. gold over nickel as a pad for a switch on a hand held consumer electronics product. I can't give any more specifics on the product but I'm sure this is what you're refering to. best regards, justin medernach
