AT Expo Rosemont | 29 September, 2000

We would like to know what people thought about this year's ATExpo Show in Rosemont. Was it a valuable show to those who attended? Also, for those who did attend, do you remember seeing SMTnet literature? Thanks for your time and support.

I actually thought this years ATE Show was excellent both with exhibitors and attendance. Easi line...no comment. Dont remember seing SMTnet info.

This was my first year going to this show (many, many years of Nepcon West & Texas), I thought it was a good show. The new co-location with SMTA International brings additional attendees and topics of interest, and the ATExpo 'nuts & bolts' kind of stuff is a good match to those of us who wear more than just a process hat. I have an SMTnet flyer from the show, can't remember where I picked it up (maybe the EASI line?)....

I thought the conference was worth while. There seemed to be more foot traffic in the EAP, but it remains an assembly show. CAL -- What did you mean by no comment regarding the Easi Line?

NJEV- You can contact me off line for my opinion on the Easi line :caldon@smtnet.com. Compared to past products this one was weak. Missing parts, Screws sticking out, the thermo-sensor was right next to the button so the longer you held the button the higher the temp went.We saw more boards in the trash then we did on the display table. The line did not show "High Technology-Advanced manufacturing" the way it should. Two simple elements could have made the Easi line 1) a robotic work cell 2) LEAD FREE Solder.

I thought the show was very worthwhile. My componany had its first booth there and the response was fantastic. I thought the show was very helpful for a lot of people with different interests.

Thanks to all for your input! By distributing literature at the show we hoped to increase the membership of your community and bring in as many electronics manufacturing professionals as possible to mutually benefit through information sharing. Any other ideas on how to inform your peers would be greatly appreciated..

Regarding your comments about the EASi Line - a robotic workcell was planned but the company determined they were spread too thin to support the effort about 8 weeks before the show. It was too late for a replacement. The manual assembly operation was not not as elegant, but much more representative of the way contract manufacturers operate. The EASi Line has always been a forum for state of the market technology. Lead-free solder is a consideration, and may be used in the future (maybe even next year) but again, very few companies currently use lead-free solder. As for units in the trash, all of the units were collected and kept. Nearly 3000 units were built over the 3 day show, and there were only about 30 defective units through the show - 1% fallout built on a line put together in 3 days in the middle of a show is pretty good.
