Question on 4785 component database Universal chipshooter | 24 October, 2001

I am hoping to find out what database format is used in the component library in the Universal Software for the 4785 chipshooter. The format is something like dbase or foxpro or access. This is an old program and I would like to connect to the component database directly rather than use the old interface. I know that this will probibly not thrill the Universal Instrument fly's in here but give me a break its an old program.

I'm not positive, but I believe the 4785 library is not in an off the shelf database format. The software for the HSP4785's was written by Sanyo, and I think they used a proprietary database format. I do not know of anyone outside of Sanyo that can write to their database. Even Universal is not able to edit library information without going through the Sanyo interface, I believe.

Sanyo, being a Japanese company, may not have used American-market products (Microsoft, etc.) when they wrote the software way back when. Our first Sanyo 850 (HSP4785) shipped with a Japanese based computer - even the keyboard was in Kanji. Later, Sanyo translated the software to English, but did not release the source code to Universal. Even the later HSP4790 series machines have the same issue.

You are correct...These are proprietary codes. Your best bet is to stick to the UCT-31. Other folks have tried to create a tool of their own, but have had little success. Universal Instruments offers component library conversion tools as well as pattern program conversion tools if you need to upgrade for newer machine types. They also have some pretty attractive "trade-in" programs going on right now to help you move on to newer gear. Check them out at http://www.uic.com
