Are these 2 surface finishes the same? If not what is the difference?

They probably the same. Most likely someone is saying immersion gold [immersion Au] as a short hand for ENIG [ Electroless Nickel - Immersion Gold]. It is very uncommon to plate gold directly on copper, because gold and copper form a brittle intermetallic compound that will not solder.

You can go to http:\\www.circuitree.com they had a supplement with the april issue of the magazine with a very good article on 4 board finish, if you are able to find it on the web site you will find all your anwser and more :)The article name was: "Board Finishes for EMS provider" by Bruce Houghton, Celestica Toronto
