PCB Pad lifted - repair | 13 November, 2002

Hi All,

I am producing a lot of high cost PCBA where the pCB material is the `ROGER' material. Due to some of the high components and handling we get pad lifted issues sometimes and as of now are unable to do repairs on these. Please help if anybody has done such repairs. what kind of adhesives to be used which can withstand the heat upto 220�C when the component is soldered back on the pads. Any repair guides available !!... really need help.

Rogers is a PWB materials manufacturer based in CT. they make a lot of unique materials for PWB fab such as a 1 time bendable PWB.

I would call Rogers. Depending on what materail of theirs you are using it may require special processing. I would also send them one of your boards with defects they could probably tell you how to stop that from happening.

As DaveF suggested I would contact a shop that has done repair. You should have the PCB/PWB Print and laminate information with you when you make the call. Ask the repair shops if they have continual experience with the Rogers Material you are using.

I could give you adhesive manufacturer's names who are in this business, YET it is better to get you to someone who does these repairs day in and day out.

Ooooooooo. You're correct Vinny has to be talking about Rogers teflon boards.

There are many different types of PTFE based products. Generally speaking, PTFE has a melting point of 620degF and withstands solder reflow and HASL processes. Example of exposures: the material can take 550degF for 10 sec/per side solder float condition without affecting the copper bond.

Hand soldering is THE toughest part about assembling PTFE substrates. Hand soldering takes care to insure the copper bond is not diminished. Typical operators that routinely run glass boards keep their soldering irons at over 700degF.

Consider: * Checking and better controlling your process temperatures. * Getting some scrap PTFE boards from your fabricator so that your operators to practice lifting pads in a less painful way.

It doesn't have to be the the microwave Rogers Duroid(spelling?) material. Rogers does make other materials. Even though the material you suggested was also one my initial thoughts, I figured it better for him to go to a shop that has current experience. It it was the microwave material some special skills and knack will be needed.

As for stopping the problem, I don't think this is a 100% option. You can get pretty good and train your workers good, even certification, and still some scrap will occur, whereas repair depending on your customers specifications might be an option.

So to add to my other note, I would write also know the specifications and what types of repair are acceptable before you call a repair house

I guess we can read the intital request in two ways a continual problem or just a rare problem with only a few boards that if repaired would generate easy revenue.
