Here's part of what I could read:

"We evaluated the influence of Lift-off (Fillet-lifting) and the influence of thermal fatigue, in this case on combination between various terminal platings of electronic components and Pb-free solder, Sn-37Pb solder. As the result, (1) Lift-off is the same level to compare flow soldering and spot reflow soldering in THD. (2) In this case of combination between Sn-3.5Ag solder and Sn-Bi plating, Bi contents is near by 3wt%, Lift-off will occur. (3) The rate of solder crack worsens by component which has a high plastic strain in solder joint, in this case of combination between Sn-37Pb solder and Sn-5~6Bi plating."

For help getting your Acrobat Reader to handle that document, try this:

Thanks for posting that, by the way. We're in the midst of a Japanese component supplier wanting to go lead free and it was very pertinent, if not depressing as well.

Thanks

We're an OEM and buy a lot of stuff from over there, some for cost, some just for availability. Don't know where this is going but it doesn't look good.

Can anyone tell me of a timeline for Lead Free implementation? I know different coutries are talking about different approaches. But, is there a consensus in Japan? Europe? US? The IPC site has a great pdf...but it is 2 years old! Any more current information?

Thanks!

Hi,

Europeon mandate has been passed to enforce lead free from June 2006 i guess. The japanese manufacturers have long implemented lead free and most of the component manufacturers have already gone lead free. I will post more specific links later.

thanks
