what are your grading criterias? All of these work pretty good but have differences in the "bells and whistles" I like the Air-Vac DRS24 (no exp. with the 22) because of the large under heater and thermo-couple control. but it is very slow and costly. the ERsa I believe is I.R. and I will leave it at that (I don't want to start the IR vs. convection / Ford vs. chevy thing)and I don't have the experience with IR to make a statement. Metcal station I am not familiar with unless it is the old OK industries micro oven in which I always liked for its simplicity in operation and programming. Both the Air-Vac and The Metcal have performed very well for me in the past.

By the way, Ford trucks and Chevy cars are my preference

The Ersa system is fine however there are thermocoupling problems and the service from Ersa has been very poor of late. The Metcal won't handle larger boards and the heating is inconsistent.Especially with BGA components. We see this via inspection under the BGA and show inconsistent burn patterns. Air Vac is exceptional and the service is also very good. But it is expensive....... Might I suggest another alternative? That is comparable to Airvac for less money?

The DRS systems are far superior. They don't compete with ERSA or Metcal.

The nozzle technology, heaters, and software are so much better. I would find a used DRS22C and use it before those other systems. The vision system in the DRS22 is great and can do 1 mil.

Without knowing your boards and components its difficult to comment- beyond users of those mfgs. and models you mention commenting on performance, reliablity of the equipment and service & support from the mfg. As with any machine, its best to test drive yourself because what works for one user's application may not for yours. With rework systems, its not too difficult to get the vendor to let you have one for a trial period, or go to their nearest facility to evaluate. If you run large boards, I would consider Teradyne- SRT as well because they have powerful pre-heaters. PACE is another vendor with rework systems to consider. My criteria for evaluating rework equipment has been ease of use (how many ops to accomplish a task) and thermal control and perheat power as well as the optics.

We been using the ERSA for a couple of years now with no problems. Guess I can't comment on the poor service as I haven't required their services. I sampled in all the units you mentioned, each was nice in their own way. One of the things that influenced me when purchasing the ERSA unit was that I didn't need to invest in all those darn nozzles. I've been able to take off any component that I needed to without worrying about if I had the right nozzle. Big plus when you're a contact manufacturer.

That is where I would go...

I have used AirVac, Ersa, Metcal, Conceptronics and SRT

SRT is is the Best from where I stand, Good Luck...
