Yes.

Reflow soldering PTH components goes under different names. * SMTnet's friend Bob Willis popularized the "intrusive reflow soldering" term. * Jim Blankenhorn, another of our friends, and others popularized "pin and paste". * Still others use the term "paste in hole".

Search the fine SMTnet Archives and you'll find hundreds of postings on the topic.

I have had a look at what Bob Willis say's and the answer to my problem is not there. The paste we are using has a very high viscosity and I beleive that if we reduce the metal content to less than 90% it will solve the problem. The problem is partial filling of the barrels, so insufficient paste is present.

Good Luck Neil,

When I first saw this process described, what you are experiencing was my first visual thoughts. Partial filling as well as huge solder voids inside of the joints.

I figured for low reliability product or short life maybe this technique had it's place in the market place.

Now if you slowed down the insertion speed and as you note have a lower viscosity you should be able to improve things.

Yet I think you have to also live with some less than good solder joints, from a cross sectioning perspective.
