Hi,

I'm a non-technical person working for a small MFG company that uses SMT. We are experiencing a high level of board failures due to "insufficent soder".

Where is the best place for me to get data to bring myself up to a level of knowlegde on wave sodering to help QA solve this problem? We currently have no one in house to answer questions, and I don't want to bring in a consultant without some knowleged.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Dyann Ameritron, Inc. California

Hi Dyann,

Visit http://www.smtinfo.net and click the link "wave soldering". The page that comes up links to quite a few technical articles that could be of interest to you.

Is it a mixed technology build (TH and SMT)? Do you have a reflow oven or just a wave?

You also would want to talk with your flux supplier. They are usually knowledgeable in the proper application of and heating of their fluxes. Usually, insufficient solder in a wave process is related to insufficient preheat, dwell time, and flux application. It can be all three or just one of these parameters.
