Samsung Placement Machines | 4 August, 2003

Shortlisted a Samsung machine CP45FV for purchase for a medium speed application. Any feedback on your impressions of Samsung machines in general and also in terms of company, service, support, software etc. that you would like to share would be greatly appreciated?

Other prospectives on the shortlist are Universal and Mydata.

No sales pitch from companies, please! Thanx.

My experience with Samsung has been great...very capable machine..so no issues with the machine itself. there are actually a lot of these machines in use....My problem is the Internal support..I know as of June they had 3 Services people supporting the Northamerica region.... they are lean on the support side and I have some issues there. I do know in the last three months The Sales manager was let go and the Service manager resigned so I am not sure who is the main POC. I do know Samsung uses Assembly Technology Inc. As there state side Applications provider. Assembly Technology Inc. President is Moe Tehrani and can be contacted at 215-322-2975 x 11 or mtehrani@ix.netcom.com

You gave no further UIC or Mydata info...

Thanks for the useful feedback. I understand that there is a new Samsung distributor - Dynatech (seems to be very customer oriented - I guess partly because they are a privately held company!) and that they have taken over the existing facility of Samsung in Horsham,PA. Also understand they have re-recruited the former sales manager (Mike Foster - Tel: (215)675-3566) and service team who were earlier with Samsung. They have promised good support and are openly confronting prior problems that existed with service.

Was considering the GSM from Universal and the MY 12 from Mydata.

I am currently a Samsung user and have been a Philips User (TOPAZ).

I have more and better things to talk about Philips platform than Samsung.

Have you looked at Assembleon(PHILIPS)?

Haven't really thought about Philips. My engineers and operators are trained / experienced in Samsung, Universal and Mydata machines. We do not want to reinvest in training at this point. The operator preference seems to be for Samsung, that's why it ranks amongst our top choices.

Would definitely like to know more about your problems/opinions about Samsung. Thanks.

As Cal mentioned "Internal support" it is the most important item when selecting equipment.

Support has been very weak for us, I have been told it will change, but been hearing it for months.. sorry but it is the truth.

As an engineer I still favor Philips for their fast response when issues come up, not to mention spare parts available within hours.

I don't have any association with philips but It has been the most flexible and dependable machine I have ever used. It is worth the time to take a look at Assembleon platform.

Thanks for the update. I did just call Samsung and Mike Foster is indeed there but out on business trip. Seems you have all the scoop needed.

As for the machine we had a pure laser vision (I guess you can call laser vision) and it was pretty good. I would opt for a camera which I do think all the 45s have now.

Though I like Samsung machines...Am still a big fan of UIC and MyData.

Just personal choice

Thanks for the feedback and appreciate your views. Here are my thoughts on the issue:

Our engg's and operators say that Samsung is the easiest machine to train new operatos on. They however love Universal and Mydata and are pretty open to getting any machine. Our engg's are concerned about the support (service and spares) as well. Our thread here has made that clear as well. Looks like I need to get a performance guarantee IF we end up deciding on Samsung!

Now that said it boils down to the finance guys and the engg's to sit together to make the cost-benefit tradeoffs. Samsung apparently gives the most in terms of features for the amount you pay. Also I did see notice that the cost of spares is very competitive with Samsung. Universal seems to be have a lot of flexibility & support and the key point of Mydata is its large board capability.

I just had a chat with my engg's and though Assembelon seems to be a good machine, they are reluctant to starting over on a new platform.

I have been battling with these trade-offs and hence this thread!! Thanks for all your inputs and thoughts.

You are welcome and thank you for all the inputs. You are right in that these new machines have the camera vision. Like I said in my other post, my engg's like all the machines but prefer Universal and Mydata for a bit more available flexibility like board size etc. but Samsung for the ease of use and operation. The finance guys tend to be leaning in Samsung's favor but it is for the team to make the trade-off's!

Hi Sat,

I'm Larry Groves the former service manager from Samsung-

The 45 is a good machine with low service problems from the field. One of the major plusses is the vision system which is really one of the most capable I have used. Cal is correct, I left mainly so I could travel a little less and see my family. However, The service guys that are there now are great guys and can be reached anytime you need help. Have you purchaced the Samsung yet? And what has your experience been. If you have not purchased we are using Samsung and looking at going to move to some higher speed equipment because of increase in volume. We might be interested in selling our Samsung CP45FV or CP45F. This equipment is 1.5yrs old low hours. Please call if interested

Our company purchased a CP40C about 2 years ago. The sales and service then has been very good. I feel the service needs a little work now though. As far as the machine itself goes, it is easy to learn, easy to operate, easy to maintain and it can perform all we need it to, now and for the future. I conducted some extensive research on which machine to buy and the CP40 has proved to be a very good choice.

I work for a large Contract manufacturer. We use Fuji Siemens and Universal. Universal is by far the most stable reliable system. They always have the parts in stock we need. Great support. Samsung has now pulled out of direct sales in the US. I would go with the UIC New or used you can not go wrong.
