I am trying to figure out how many feeders I will need for our first venture into SMT. I have broken down our largest board we would build into the different feeder types. What I need to know is, how many extra should I order? Why?

Why order extras, because they break, get bent etc... you also want to look into replenishment of the machine during a production run, you want to have backups ready when a part runs out. Also having extras will allow offline set-up while a job is running so you can change over quicker. You may wany to look at your next largest board and cover that also this may allow for the few backups that you need while providing plenty for the next job to be either completely or mostly setup when you are ready to change over. I am a believer that you can't have enough feeders (within reason of course)How much can you spend? That might answer your question already.

Money is not a problem, I am more concerned with ordering the appropriate amount from the start. It doesn't have to be exact but close so I can do all of the off-line set ups and etc; At the same time I don't want to order double the amount because that would be a huge price tag. I just want a safety margin.

A minimalist approach would be to add one 8mm, one 12mm one 16mm you get the idea. It's not that big a deal to swap a reel of whatever component onto the open feeder.

The next step up is to gauge the cost of the initial set of feeders, say, if there was a price break for twenty and you were going to get 16....for four more the whole set may be less expensive..

Next, would be to get two extra of each type. Probably still not overkill and if one breaks you're still covered.

You should have enough feeders to build your largest board and have your next largest board loaded up to run as well. Unless you only have one product you will quickly find out that changeover time can really kill your productivity. Keep in mind that the vendor will usually discount your inital feeder order quite a bit when you buy your machine but you will pay close to full price after your get it installed (they know you gotta buy your feeders from them after you get the machine). Buy 'em now and save yourself some bucks later-

The short answer? More Get enough for the largest set-up, the second largest set-up plus 10-20% more for breakage and wear.

Don't forget about feeder racks. I would recommend 20-30% more slots than feeders if cost is not a big issue. Feeders are pricey and there never seem to be enough, so you want to make sure they are looked after. I've seen operators pile them up in big piles. very scary

Without knowing your requirements... here is a safe bet.. 8mm feeders will typically be your biggest user followed by 12mm then 16mm then 24mm... ect... apples to oranges ? 100 8mm 25 12mm 12 16mm 10 24mm is a close ratio.... as others have stated you should take your largest requirement and double the feeders and go from there... oh and dont forget to add a few vibe feeders... ;) gluck
