What is the most effecient form of heating ,ie calrod, IR, convection , or a mixture ? to produce a good thermal profile on a wavesoldering system on thermally challenging multi-layered boards?

Thanks

Forced Convection delivers the most efficient thermal transfer.

Adam, I agree with Pete C. Forced convection is the best and I've had experience with each type you mentioned. When soldering high mass assemblies, you may need to have both top and bottom side pre-heaters in your machine. This depends on the thermal characteristics of the assembly you are soldering. In the past, I've had to "thermally soak" high mass assemblies in stand alone ovens placed next to the wave machine in order to make up for the lack of pre-heat in the machine. Hope this helps, Claude cwilson(remove_this)@reptron.com

We have very good results with a mixture. Lower 1st and 2nd preheat is convection, 3rd lower is calrod. No upper 1st and 2nd, 3rd upper is IR. With this combination I have found no challenge that could not be turned into a good profile.

I agree with Erv. That is the same combination we use and it has served us well.
