Tape & Reel Machine

Tape & Reel Machine | 29 January, 2004

I am looking to purchase a tape and reel machine. I have advertised on SMTnet for one. I have no experience with this type of machine, so can anyone recommend a brand to buy or one to avoid. I require a machine to reel up parts from sticks/tubes. Nothing too complicated or over the top. Programming and set up time has to be quick and easy.

Any feedback welcome.

Thanks, Alan.

We contract our taping & reeling, but there has been some threads on the machinery on SMTnet. Try searching the fine Archives, for instance: http://www.smtnet.com//forums/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_thread&CFApp=1&Thread_ID=5405&#Message21072

I was also looking into purchasing a tape and reel machine. I started looking at Q-Corporations QMT-1250 machine. What I found though was that one of the major costs was the supplies. A lot of suppliers require you to purchase a minimum quantity of reels and charge a setup fee. I am a contract manufacturer and what I want the machine for is the bulk product, (IC's, loose parts) supplied by our customers. We are not going to tape 5000 loose parts it would be more like 200 parts. The cost justification is turning out to be more difficult than I was initially thinking. What tape and reel suppliers have you found and what are their terms?

Thanks, Paul

I have received info from Q corp, prices of the machines and the option prices too. I am waiting for info from V-tek too. I am in exactly the same position as you, loose parts from customers, mosty small quantities in tubes. I have had very little response so far from emails and requests that I have sent out.I thought it would be pretty easy to pick up a machine. Let me know how you get on.

To my point of view, you should be aware of some issues. Manual taping machines with a foot switch for tape advancement require quite a few adjustments before you start the job, like: Tape width adjustment, component rail adjustment, pitch setting, heat seal temperature adjustment, cover tape tension. With improper setting, you can wrinkle and burn the cover tape, or your component feeder may not work correctly. It will require some time and tests to get the setting right. PSA tape sticks by itself without heat seal, but not all feeders work correctly with adhesive tape. The manual action of aiming the plastic tube to the tape pockets and control the component flow with the finger requires quite some skills. Im hearing from customers, that 1-2 % leads are bend even from the most skilful operators. Are you dealing with different sizes of components? You will have to buy some stock of tape and cover tape. If you do only a few components at the time, youll keep your stock for a long time. You cant re-use heat sealed tape, assuming your placement machine doesnt chop your empty tape in pieces. Bottom line: I do see quite a few taping machines on customer sites, collecting dust.

Does your placement machine require only taped components? I know that stick feeders dont work well (all brands, all feeders), but I would exhaust all other possibilities, before I would consider taping components myself. Do you have a tray feeder? Could you manually place components into strips of tapes and place the trays into your tray magazine feeder? If your quantities are so small, why dont you place the components manually?

We had a V-Tek TM30 manual taping machine using heat seal top tape. Had very good results- with skilled operator - to supply taped components to our 2x Fuji IP2 machines - no tape cropping. Stefan's points are somewhat valid, but you can have a successfull process and for low cost. We decided early on to save the spent bottom tapes and reels off the IP2s before we purchased the machine. We quickly had a good supply of tape widths. All we had to buy was the top tape. We hated the stick/tube feeders so much and loved the taping machine! Production rate off the IP2s increased, scrap rate decreased and IP2 operators were more efficient - less time screwing with the stick/tubes and feeders. Also, hey its green! Less of that plastic tape going to the garbage.

Thanks for the feedback guys. We have Fuji IP3's, so we can save all the reels and bottom tape too. Stick feeders are a nightmare. Lost production due to the long set up times of vibratory feeders is ridiculous. Also, pick up rate is inconsistant from these feeders. We have a wide variation of component types. I am keen to get a machine.

Thanks, Alan.

Hi Pete, thank you for your positive feed-back. I was told by a carrier tape vendor, that the tape cant be re-used for heat sealing. I made some tests myself and found, that if you are going to use exactly the same seam, the cover tape came off quite easily, unless you used more heat. If you made a new seam next to the old one it was o.k. I guess it has to do with the chemistry of the plastic. If I remember correctly PVC could be heat welded several times, PE not. However, if you successfully can use old tape, I may get a few people re-consider.

Hi Stefan,

We had a good operator. He adjusted the heat and pressure to get it right on the used tape. We re-used tape from Samsumg & Toshiba TSOP44, QFP64 ASIC as well as a connector on 56mm tape when they came in tray. We also did on many SOICs off stick. As I recall, we could re-tape a few times. There was good communication between the taper and the placement guys to get the best results off the Fuji feeders. We had the taping machine in the feeder setup area.
