Board Support During Pick & Place | 13 February, 2004

I populate several thin panels (0.032")using a Samsung S-2000 P-N-P machine. With panel sizes of 8" by 10", it is very difficult to clamp the panels into the machine with deflection and bowing. Also, the Samsung makes it very difficult to adjust the OEM board supports without ultimately shutting down the machine. Is there a "cost effective" board support system or are there "tricks of the trade" to solve this annoying aspect of SMT?

Try taping another board under board that is to be populated all needs to be done is adjust z if applicable

Gridlok is good but it will also depends on your board. Board that is warpped and thick will not be flatten by gridlok as the concept for this support system is to conform to the shape of the underside of the board with very minimum upward force from the system. So if the baord warps and is thick, it will stay that way.

Hi, This is true if you are using the Grid-lok in the "full auto mode" which sets and resets for every pcb. Ohterwise you can teach the system a flat board (by various techniques) and it will maintain that profile throughout the product run. You should try it yourself - there is no risk.

Asking the Grid Lok to flatten out the board is like asking the SMT Reflow Furnace to detab the panel.

It was not designed to make up for the deficiencies of your fab supplier or your unsuported 1st reflow pass on the the chain conveyor.

However, if you want a simple, well supported under board support, grid lok is the prouct to do that. This is not a sales pitch. I am an end user that has spent much time evaluating this problem.

I would recommend trying a Board-lok Tooling support fixture. In my opinion, no other tooling support system or fixture compares to the type of support board-lok provides. They can manufacture the board-lok with many options such as vacuum, tooling pins, and even snuggers. You can contact Transition Automation located in Billerica, MA.
