Waverider | 6 June, 2000

I am having a problem with the masking coming off and the traces disappearing on the coupon boards on my WaveRider after only 25 to 30 runs. Has anyone else been experiencing this same type of issue? I spoke a rep at ECD and their response was that it is normal for this to happen. I've already gone through 3 boards and they don't come cheap! At this time I only have one for 5 lines and I'm using it once per day per line unless we have a problem. Any ideas or suggestions?

Well I already told em that this was unacceptable and they don't have very good reps, but that doesn't seem to phase them. I've had nothing but trouble trying to get this implemented into our process and they haven't been a whole lotta help. I'm gonna keep blasting away at them until they do something about this. Thanks for the feedback!!!

First of all I would like to thank you for your candid comments on this subject. ECD listens to its customers and values their input. Yes, our experience shows the coupons have a 30 to 60 run life depending on application. This works out to between 75 cents to a $1.25 per run. Fluxes, solder temperatures, and conveyor speeds all affect the life of any test vehicle. From a design viewpoint the coupon continues to be a tough issue. We are balancing the desire to thermally reproduce what a "real" board would see with coupon life. We could certainly eliminate the foil and extend the life of the coupon. We have also considered burying the foil in some sort of multi-layer structure. Unfortunately this would be further from the look and operation of a �real� board If you have any thoughts or ideas we would be more than happy to develop a longer lasting product that performed as well.

I intend to evaluate a Wave Rider in our process in the next couple of weeks. I don't think I would appreciate the continual maintenence of the device. Does anyone have any experience with the Optimizer product? Does it have similar issues?

Whoa dude- I got stoked when I read your 411 'cuz my first thought was that any EXPERIENCED waverider knows that SEXWAX is the only thing that keeps your board slick while running the pipeline. You are way cool, party on dude!!!

Chrys wrote about the Optimizer in the archives. I think she like the Malcom Dip Tester and a piece of glass better than either one.
