Good Profiler for reflow ovens | 14 August, 2004

Hi,

We are currently using the profiler built into our Soltec oven, but are looking for something better and does anyone have any ideas.

We want to be able to quickly analyze the profile against solder paste and component profiles so we can quickly adjust oven settings, and see if things are ok. Who has the best software for this kind of thing.

I checked the archives, but there was not too much on this.

Hi, to profile any type of temperature process, you should try ECD products.

I'm used to work with their tool called Super M.O.L.E. Gold, wich is a data logger for six thermocouples that you can run through a reflow oven, for example, and then you can download these datas to your computer and manage them with a free software available directly on their website. Very usefull to compare several profiles on a single board or one profile on several boards and many other functions needed by a process engineer...

Thanks for the info! In the software can you add solder paste specs and heat sensitive components and see where the profile sits against these fast? Measurement is the easiest part I think, but what I thinks harder is good software to analyze the profile fast and show how it fits into a process window defined by components and solder paste.

We are getting the occasional failure of some VCXO's and XTAL's on our boards so we would like to incorporate these components into our profile process windows in a fast way.

Well, regarding the paste specifications, it's no problem to add yours if it's not allready defined in the default library; parameters are for example, soak temp min & max, liquidous, ramp positive max, spike ramp min & max, all timings and so on.

now, regarding the componnents, you can't define parameters directly linked with componnents (as far as it's the data logger software and not an independant process software) but you have possibility to define a process window with the tolerance you can define for the report and analysis. I must say that it's not the more flexible software I saw, but it's enough to manage your reflow process.

I think you should download the soft documentation from their web site (if you can without loggin) or I can attach it for you in an e-mail. For sure, best is to see the software by your own.

I was searching for some infos about Auto-SIR, and I found something that may interrest you; Concoat, wich is the company who sells Auto-SIR systems, also has profiling tools and they seem to have a more powerful software to analyse and predict profile regarding parameters like soderpaste, componnents and so on. It seems to be closer to what you're looking for.

Pls contact ECD for built in monitoring system or KIC 24/7. This products will monitor your oven performance and profile round the clock without stopping. If your profile is out of the spec, the software will gives you an alarm and the machine will stop auto and your UPS wlll activate to transport exiting boards out from the chamber of your oven.

We took delivery on a new DataPaq system about a year ago. This included the ROS software. Best thing we ever did for our reflow proces. The price is right, too.
