Hi Chics,

It all depends on where you are in the world - in Europe robots were used back end (Ericsson), and usually Fujis front end (Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson). In China you're obviously not going to need the Robots....

I don't think you're so right about this thing.

In China, there're so many companies that are using the most advanced equipments in the world. Machines using in Europe can also be found in China. In my company, we have the equipments like Siemens, Philips(FCM), Panasonic, Agilent(SJ50&5DX), OK(SRT) and so on. We design and manufacture the cellular phone, and other telecommunication equipments.

Hi FengAng,

Sorry about the misunderstanding - last time I was out there all of the front end SMT equipment was very good, but the final assembly of the phones into cases was being undertaken by hand, whereas in Europe we were seeing a lot of automation on the back end assembly to cut costs.

Most of the equipment you mentioned was SMT, are you using Robots for the final assembly (Keypad, display, casing etc)?

How are you finding the FCM's in comparison to the Panasonics?

Hi Rob,

We use the most advanced equipments in front end, but the back end we always use manual assembly, including display, LCD, casing. It's all because we should balance the cost & efficiency.

I think if you are the boss, you will also do things like that. After all, profit is our target!

FCM & Panasonics(we use MV2F) are both suitable for the mass production. From my experience, MV2F has the bigger size, and more boring noise than FCM(The MV2F has 2 feeder tables, and turret type makes the feeder speedy moving with noise; FCM are modularized, and has the speed advantges on Pick/Place). The changover time of MV2F is shorter than FCM, but both of them have the long time of changeover we can't bear.

So we set up the Siemens line for the production of low volume, high density. That's to say, our line conversion is not more than 10 minutes.

SMT equipment is just part of the capital investment. Another big chunk of invesment is the test equipment. You have a choice of R&S CMU or Agilent Mementum test box.

SMT equipment is half of the investment. The other half is the test equipment. The popular choice for test equipment are either R&S CMU or Agilent. For GSM/GPRS, it's about US50K per piece.

What do you think of the possibilities of purchasing from European and Asisn manufacturers the parts near completion and hand assembling the finished phones here in the United States.I am refering to the manufacture of CDMA/TDMA/GSM Satellite, VoIP and similar phones.

What production diference, product to market and degree of economic feasibilness would this make?

2) I wish to establish a business partner relationship with you by purchasing from you the parts near completion and hand assembling the finished phones here in the United States. I wish to know your reception of this idea and partnership in pursuing this goal.

I have at my disposal the human resources capable of developing this idea to fruition.
