Hi all,

Yesterday I met a VCO(Vector-Controlled Oscillator) supplier, who provided the component spec -- peak temperature over 240 centigrade stands 7secs. But this spec is obviously different from our spec -- 260 centigrade 10secs.

They told me that this "component" is not actually a component, it's a system in package. So our spec is not fit for their product. And they insisted their component is OK for lead free.

Thus, I have a question now. What's the right temperature test for this VCO part? When a high temperature test is performed, which point of the part do we need to check(sometimes a component comprises many kinds of material, and the component has the body, lead, surface ect.)? What about other parts??

I have checked the former thread you gave to me. But I think it's totally not the same thing. I want to know, when we see the component spec -- 260 centigrade 10secs, the 260 centigrade means what? It's the environmental temperature or the component body temperature?

And I have investigated a lot of component manufacturers, it seems like that most of them just change the plating of components' lead for lead free. That means lead free process has little impact on the component manufacturers, is it right?

We agree, my suppliers are simply chaging the soldertability protection on their components, while continuing to specify the identical component as the SnPb solderability protect. This seems foolish, because with no-lead the component temperature will surely be warmer than ~235C. It could be that the component manufacturers are HOPING there is little impact from no-lead.

Or maybe, in a good world, components are so tolerant that the increase in temperature has little impact. [Stay out of commercial jets.]
