Universal Rad 6348A chain advancement problems..... | 18 November, 2004

I know this is not a SMT machine, but I thought I might find someone on here who could help me. We have an old Universal 6348A Radial lead inserter. The problem we are having is the chain will stop, periodically, before the chain stop status wheel makes it to the sensor. Always in the same spot in the program. Always at the same spot on the wheel. I unplug the motor, advance it until the sensor is made, push start and it continues running. We have, so far, changed the relay in the chain drive card box. Also we changed the 8AC out card. I also removed the belt from the motor and gearbox, and advanced the motor a little, reinstalled the belt, and the problem just moved to another spot in the program. The damn motor is $1100, and the gearbox is $5000, so I really want to make sure they are bad before I order one. Any suggestions???

There is a couple of things to check.

Put the machine in diagnostics and let the chain run. You should see it run the same as you would if purging it. Sometimes the 2 hall effects at the disk do not see the disk as it turns.

Check the driver board and use the pot to slow the chain index down and see if it fixes this problem.

Lastly, you may have an intermittent interlock or the flags on the heads or cutter station may be blocking the sequencer sensors long enough to put the machine into a sequencer error /interlock without actually seeing the sequencer error / interlock come on.

Hello Boy this sure brings back memories from the years past. Was a field engineer for universal for about 9 years. Worked almost exclusively on the Rad 1 and Rad 2. The first thing that I would do is remove the sequencer head that fires at the same time that your having this error. Then move the switches closer to the timing disc. Check for dirt or grease on the timing disc. Hope this might be of some help. They also did have some problems with the gear boxes going bad. At least you don't have a Rad 1. Harry

I rebuilt 6348A's for about 13 years. Check the contact at the clip locator. It's dirty, broken, or the wire is starting to come out of the crimp. Jerry
