Does anyone have any articles about performing the green stick test for IC leads? If there are no printed articles then perhaps I can get a good description from you on the proper usage of one. I would like to know from your experiences any pros and cons. Thanks

We call this the "orange stick test", but who's coloring? In preforming the test, you're supposed to use a light touch. Unfortunately, it's difficult to calibrate a "light touch." So, operators often end-up using too much force when probing or using the stick in a prying action, which can damage the solder connection.

I have heard the term as both green stick and orange stick, but yes, pushing on the leads to detect un soldered leads. The amount of force is subjective. Any thoughts on this is appreciated.

I have always been nervous with this process. I fear that the "good joints" may become fractured without coming loose. I am a proponent of this to verify a profile or something to see the strength but then we always reflow the affected joint afterwards to ensure that we did not fracture. I do know that this is a very common practice however. As Dave said "light pressure" is okay but I also don't know what that means. It may be controlled somewhat if you have the operator hold the stick at the very end while perfroming this to minimize leverage but who knows.

Are there any write-ups anywhere? My boss wants to show a customer a write-up. I"m checking IPC specs but havn't found anything. I think almost everyone does it but is not a published standard test. I hope some organization has written it up as a standard test.
