Pick and Place Camera sees Red | 7 September, 2005

The camera on the head of my Universal GSM1 (1994/5 model) displayed interference, and then the live video from it went red. This has never happened before. I've tried re-starting the machine, wriggling the camera feed wires, cleaning the lens etc. Does anyone know if this can be fixed and what to do.

You are having problems with the PEC (fid. recognition, etc.) camera, correct? Not that camera(s) on the base machine (2.6 mil, 4.0 mil, etc.). If it is the PEC camera you are talking about I don't know much but if it's one of the other cameras I might be able to offer some help.

Don't know if you'd be able to register as i'm not sure if you need to have a service contract or not but if you can go to the UIC website and register for the knowledgebase, this service has detailed advice on fault finding on universal machines, i've used it in the past and it was very good, you type in the fault symptoms and it gives you a list of possible causes, how to check the causes and how to fix it if it is one of the causes, all with diagrams/pictures and step by step instructions.

Yes, unfortunately it is the PEC camera which checks Fids and is used for Feeder Teach.

I have found that you do need a service check before you can register with UIC. Do you have access to their database still?

If you do find your camera is bad, I think they are relatively easy to replace if you get a new one. I have done a 1.0 and 4.0 GSM camera replacements but not a PEC as of yet. If it's like the 1.0 and 2.6 and 4.0's, likely it is not tough but will require re-cal. Re-cal is also not tough - you just need the correct cal. kit for you machine and that can be rented for about $4-500 per week from used machine brokers.

I have seen this before. Sounds like that You are having problem with the vision box, located in the rear left of the machine; that is if you are using the old vision system, the newer Lantern vision card is located in the VME chassi in lower front right of the machine. If you have another GSM with the same type of vision system and the same vision executive (vision s/w); just swap the vision boxes/Lantern vision card between them. This will make it easier to isolate your problem area; camera, lighting card, cables or vision box. It is quite easy to do, BUT this is expensive stuff, so make sure that you take every precaution incl. power off. Another approach is to call UIC and get advices over the phone (sometimes cheaper...). Good luck and keep us posted,

I think it may be the card thats causing the problem. When both machines are set to display a live image, the faulty machine shows pink/red. When their cables are pulled out of the card the working machine shows grey/noise and the faulty machine stays pink.

I have noticed that there are 2 PEC camera ports on the card but the machine only has 1 camera. Is there a way to assign the camera to work from the other camera port?

We had some defective camera's on our GSM's. The repair guys wanted $12,500US for two replacements from UIC. I found rebuilds at this place in New York State for $249 each. They have been working great for two years now. I even got back $30 for the old cores.
