How do you number your stencils ? | 27 October, 2005

We just bought a new/used ultrasonic stencil cleaner. The solvent we use is Zestron Vigon SC200.

We currently number our stencil frames with sharpies. The Zestron eats the sharpie markings off. I have also tried acrylic paint markers.....eats the paint markers off just as fast.

Stamping or etching numbers into our frames is not a option. Frameless stencils are not an option.

I need some type of marker that withstands the Zestron, but can be removed with some type of a more aggresive solvent.

Any ideas ?

Putting some sort of tape cover over the sharpie is not an option? Worth a shot on asking .... sounds like the solvent might eat the tape away as well but give it a try.

As Mark states, we have also used tape to cover sharpie notes and part numbers. Works well. We use kapton tape.

Just tried kapton. Solvent gets under the kapton and eats the marker away instantly.

Metal stamped tags that are glued on work. http://www.emedco.com can make em'. Even have your company logo on each one.

What do you do when they are recycled? The place I used to buy stencils from would keep your returned for credit frames separate but I wouldn't think every stencil manufacturer will do this. They might not take back the etched stencil frames.

Even just a few years ago I met a guy that said a run size of 5,000 was small. But that is more rare. What I've seen more and more is 5,000 being a life span of a board not a run size. So it's not just low volume/high mix, it's low volume/high mix/high turnover of new boards.
