Journals / Books on Selective Soldering Techniques | 23 November, 2005

Hi,

I'm working as a process engineeer at a PCB manufacturing plant.

I'm a part-time degree stundent, and for my final year project I have to evaluate and implement a selective soldering process. In order to do this, I need to find some good books/journals that cover the advantages/disadvantages of the various selective solutions including:

Dedicated robot based selective machines (miniwave, laser, soft beam, etc)

Selective pallets for use with wave soldering machines

Intrusive reflow

Hand solding

Any help to find useful books/journals would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Al

I am not aware of any such info so you may not get any replys on this but each of these systems is totally different. There is usually not much overlap of what is the right choice for an application. The solder bath machines with fixtures are for high speed/high volume. The Ersa/Tyco, etc are for high mix, but even a high speed Ersa Versaflow (we have one)is still pretty slow. I dont have any experience with a softbeam but you can do long gold pins at the joint without coating the whole pin as would be with any fountain or bath type machine. Hand soldering is the least expensive and least repeatable. I am very happy with the Ersa Versaflow machine in a high mix environment. If I can be of further help with that particular type of machine let me know. cmiller@adltech.com

Thanks for the reply. I was looking to find some technical information on each of the process technologies to help me make a decision on what would be the best solution.

I have also been collecting information on various selective soldering equipment, one of which is the Ersa range. I'll send you an email on that subject.

Thanks, Al

There is also peelable or watersoluble masking. I've only seen the peelable masking used.

Not ten minutes ago an engineer showed me a board a customer was having trouble with that they are waveing all the bottom parts. That board should be selective soldered. I just have to come up with recommendations.
