Bare boards can be electrically tested by your board house.

Primary methods used to test assembled circuit boards are: * Automated test equipment [ATE] * Manual bench-top functional test equipment

Assembled printed circuit board ATE market segments are: * In-circuit ATE * Functional ATE * Boundary Scan ATE * Manufacturing Defect Analyzers ATE

Building a Successful Board-Test Strategy [Stephen Scheiber; Second Edition, Newnes, 2001; ISBN 0750672803] does a very good job of outlining the fundimentals of various approaches to board test.

1. What are we talking about: pcb:s or pcba:s? 2. What exactly do you want to attain with this board test? 3. Are you a pcb manufactor or a pcba manufactor? 4. You did not mention what type of boards you want to test? 5. Mechanical, operating environment, electrical frequency, currents, voltage, numbers of layers, via distrubution, etc. etc. it is all a complex matter to have in mind. There are several different methods of how to do a "board test" DaveF pointed out some of them. However it could very well be a situation that you will find yourself in a position that you get to many results, but not knowing the right way to interpret these results and use them, or in other words, it will cost you a lot more money if you don't know what you are loking for.
