Separate Oven for lead-free reflow | 4 January, 2006

One of my customer is asking the need for a separate oven for lead-free reflow. In all of my researches in lead-free transition, i have not read anywhere for the necessity of a separate oven for lead-free reflow....am I missing something here?? please advice

I don't believe you are missing anything, Amol.

Mainly, you just need to make sure that your oven handles the higher temperatures needed for reflow. Also, there has been a lot of discussion on how many zones are needed to properly reflow lead-free assemblies. Most of what I have been told/read is that 5 zones is adequate. 7 zones is better.

Just make sure your profile matches the paste manufacturer's recommendations and that your oven is up to the higher temperatures.

thank you for reenforcing my knowledge of this fact. usually the customer reads 1 line in 1 paper somewhere out there and takes it as the absolute truth.

we have a 8 zone reflow, that is very capable of handling lead free (max sp 350 deg cel)

Glad to help. We're experiencing the same thing with a bunch of our customers... Someone reads one paper and they are automatically an expert on the subject...

Your 8 zone oven should definitely be more than adequate. Just make sure and pay special attention to the cool-down section of your profile. I have read that microcracks could occur from cooling down too rapidly (which is why I somewhat find the 5 zone oven a bit sketchy for lead-free). There have been some great discussions on here about microcracks, for further research.

Ask your customer why they need this? Show them your process. Then bury them in their own unknowledgeable requests. It is pretty scary how many papers are also written about how easy it is to reflow a lead-free BGA with regular leaded paste.

Pure ignorance is my answer to that.... You're with a CM, right?? Your idiot customer probably has never stepped foot on a manufacturing floor in his entire gott-damn life, but.... he reads SMT Magazine every month, and probably read some article about how the lead-free profile is different than the standard one...hence, his "requirement" for you to have a separate oven...
