Wages in Australia ? | 15 February, 2006

Hi,

Sorry, not exactly a technical question here, but maybe somebody can help ? I am looking at moving to Australia and in order to calculate living costs etc I need to know what I could reasonably expect as an experienced production / process engineer in the SMT world out there. Any help much appreciated. Cheers. Brian

Wages will depend on which coast you want to locate to. West coast wages are pretty low, but east coast is high. Housing prices range dramatically too. Sydney, for instance, is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in.

Hi,

In Melbourne expect about A$15 per hour for basic labour, A$17 per hour for team leader level, and $20-$25 per hour for better, but it depends on how talented. If your talented, you could make a lot more in the right company.

Australia is low cost to live in, but the house prices are a bit high right now, making it less attractive. Also most of the companies doing SMT are shit, with crap old machines, so you need to look around first.

We had to set up our own plant, as we could not find a decent contract manufacturer, and even all our jigs are made in the US and imported because local suppliers are so bad. If your good at your job, you might get snapped up by a bunch of desperate companies who need talented people.

There is a company called Australia Wide Consulting, who are head hunters who actually know more than how to run a filemaker database, so they might be able to help you find something. We source people though them, so they could hook you up before you even leave.

Good luck!

Regards,

Grant

Cheers Grant,

I found that very helpful too - we're going over end of this year to take a closer look at Aus & NZ (my other half was over there a long while).

Thanks,

Rob.

Hey,

Been looking at Brisbane, hoping there is enough SMT going on to be able to get a job there. Noticed a lot of manufacturing seems to be in NSW though... Staying clear of Sydney due to cost of living and Perth due to remoteness. Where do you reckon is best work wise ? Appreciate your help. Brian
