Don Spigarelli is probably best known by the electronics assembly community as the founder of HTC and SRT, and now as a consultant and Chairman of the Board at VJ Electronix.
After a period as Sales Manager with Watkins Johnson, where he was responsible for the sale of furnaces for Thick Film Firing and Reflow Soldering, and later with BTU, Don started his own business, Hybrid Technology Corporation (later HTC). HTC manufacture and sold specialized conveyorized, Conductive Reflow Soldering machines for Hybrid Circuit assembly. His experience and intimate understanding of Heat Transfer made this a logical endeavor for him.�
Always having an eye on the future, Spigarelli was intrigued by so-called �Condensation Soldering.�� He coined the name �Vapor Phase Soldering,� pioneered its development, and was a major proponent of its use in a wide range of applications; from miniscule semiconductors to hybrids, to massive back planes.� Author of many authoritative technical papers and holder of numerous patents, he really was �Mr. Vapor Phase.�
Not long after the acquisition of HTC by Dynapert in 1984, and aware of the increasing implementation of SMT, Don recognized the industry's need for sophisticated ways of repairing or reworking surface mount printed circuit assemblies. He then founded a new company, SRT, to exploit this opportunity.�
Innovative as always, Don introduced systems using selective heating mechanisms to deal with the demands of more complex fine-pitch components with ever-increasing lead counts. The Variable Perimeter Heater (VPH) was unique in quad flat pack rework technology. With the advent of area-array components, the introduction of the SierraMate Software for automation and control of processes and sequences revolutionized the rework of BGAs, chip scale packages, flip chips, and more.
