Coreco Imaging introduces Mamba-100, High Speed Embedded Vision Processor Based on the Pentium III

St. Laurent, Qc., February 14, 2001--Coreco Imaging, Inc., a leader in machine vision products, today announced the release of the Mamba-100, a PCI based embedded vision processor designed to off-load time-critical image processing tasks from the host computer. The Mamba-100 leverages the advanced technology of Intels Pentium III, with its clock speeds of up to 1 GHz, and is ideally suited for semiconductor, biomedical, and machine vision applications requiring image transfers in excess of 120 MB/s.

Next-Generation Technology Enables 30-50% Faster Operation

Based on the highly successful Mamba embedded vision processor introduced in 2000, the Mamba-100 is compatible with the latest in computing technology. The new vision processor is named for its 100 MHz CPU-to-memory bus, which enables 30 50% faster operation than the earlier generations 66 MHz bus. Applications that currently run on the Mamba are directly transferable to the new, higher speed Mamba-100.

The Mamba, the first embedded vision processor based on the Intel Pentium II processor, was also the first system of its kind to extend the PC architecture to overcome the bandwidth limitations normally encountered by the host PCI bus. The advantage of this unique platform is that the Mamba-100 utilizes existing desktop development/debug tools and existing Win32 API based software libraries to deploy embedded vision applications without sacrificing performance.

Familiar Software Environment

Mamba-100 based applications can be created using Microsoft Visual Studio using its integrated development environment. Imaging applications are easily created and tested for the target Mamba-100 system without leaving the Visual Studio environment. The final applications are executed from the host or from the on-board 48MB DOC (Disk-On-Chip), which enables the Mamba-100 to operate autonomously.

Similar to its predecessor, the Mamba-100 uses the Windows NT Embedded operating system, a derivative of Windows NT workstation. Windows NTE is a powerful operating system that allows applications to run without peripheral components such as keyboards, pointing devices, or displays. This compact system is ideally suited for the manufacturing environment with its small footprint, reduced storage requirements, and low operating costs. It features robust error recovery, boot-up support from flash-disk, and remote manageability.

Windows NTE greatly simplifies the process of porting applications developed in Windows NT because both operating systems incorporate the same WIN32 API. The machine vision applications developed on the desktop PC can be moved to Mamba with little or no modifications.

Dedicated Resources for Embedded Processing

The Mamba-100 is essentially a computer that is installed into the host computer, with 100% of its power dedicated to compute intensive, high-speed image processing tasks. The Mamba-100 is dedicated to the application and frees up the host computer by executing image processing tasks directly on its embedded processor. A key advantage of Mamba-100s embedded processing architecture is its reliability in responding to time-critical external events since all its processing resources are dedicated to a single application.

High Speed Data Transfer

Key to the Mamba-100s ability to process very high-resolution images is Coreco Imagings Auxiliary Bus (CAB), a dedicated high-speed (200 MB/s) board-to-board communication bus that channels all image data away from the host computer.

The CAB transfers image data from Coreco Imagings Viper series of intelligent frame grabbers, which includes the Viper-RGB for color applications, the Viper-Digital for integrating cameras with multiple digital inputs, and the Viper-Quad for simultaneous acquisition from up to four cameras. The Viper-Quad is ideally suited for semiconductor, reticle inspection, and multi-stage inspection applications requiring acquisition of multiple views of an object.

The advanced technology of the Pentium III employs enhanced MMX instructions along with a newly introduced Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE), memory and cache management instructions to speed up data processing. The image processing tasks involving MMX and floating point instructions now run faster as there is no MMX to floating point switching overhead involved. SSE utilizes 8 newly introduced 128 bit floating point registers in PIII, which are not shared with MMX instructions. OEM developers can use Windows NTE together with Coreco Imagings MMX-optimized SMART series of C vision libraries including the new features such as SMART OCR and SMART Matrix, to quickly build new applications for optical character recognition, alignment and 1D and 2D barcode decoding.

Scaleable Architecture

The Mamba-100 offers flexibility in system configuration for maximum performance. While the Mamba-100 architecture facilitates single node for standalone operation, multiple Mamba-100s can be installed in the same system to process larger amounts of data and execute applications at higher speeds. Two CAB ports on each processor allow several Mambas to be interconnected for either pipeline or parallel processing. Each board operates independently of the host, which can accommodate multiple CPUs without special configuration. There is no limit to the number of Mamba-100s that can be installed in any one system.

Additional Hardware Features

Other hardware features of the Mamba-100 include an on-board VGA controller, a 100BaseT network controller, two IDE ports, one floppy drive port, two serial ports, and one parallel port. Twelve opto-isolated I/O lines allow the Mamba-100 to interface to the external environment. The Mamba-100 has a dedicated 512MB of memory, allowing it to deliver the highest image processing performance available when coupled with the Pentium III using its clock speeds of up to 1 GHz.

Based on three proven technologies - Intels PIII, Microsoft Window NT Embedded and Coreco Imagings CAB, the Mamba-100 is a unique system for machine vision technology. Applications for this compact, rapid image transfer system include semiconductor processes such as bonding, reticle inspection, and wafer alignment. The Mamba-100 starts at $4500 and is available immediately from Coreco Imaging, Inc.
