Circuit Breaker
Circuit breaker is an automatic device that are used for stopping the flow of current in an electric circuit as a safety measure. Whenever electrical wiring in a building has too much current flowing through it, circuit breaker cut the power. Circuit breaker is a simple switch that are connected to either a bimetallic strip or electromagnet. The electricity magnetizes the electromagnet. Increasing the current boost the electromagnet’s magnetic force and decreasing current lowers the magnetism. When current reach unsafe levels, electromagnet is strong enough to pull down a metal lever connected to the switch linkage, linkage shifts, tilting the moving contact away from stationary contact to break the circuit. Electricity shut off.
One of the newer and advanced circuit breakers is the ground fault circuit interrupter or GFCI. It monitors current levels and shut down the circuit more quickly. GFCI work like normal, until a problem (somebody accidentally touches the hot wire) occur, current surges in the hot wire, but not in the neutral wire. The GFCI breaks the circuit preventing electrocution. Since it does not have to wait for current to climb to unsafe levels, the GFCI reacts much more quickly than a conventional breaker.
Simplest circuit protection device on the other hand is fuse, a thin wire enclosed in a casing.. The fuse disintegrates when it heats up above a certain level. Once destroy, fuse opens the circuit before the excess current damage can damage the building wire.
