Norwalk, CT, - Assembly East, the only Mid-Atlantic trade event dedicated exclusively to world-class engineered solutions for product assembly, held its fourth annual exhibition and conference May 1-2, 2002 at the Fort Washington Expo Center in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. A total of 2,098 industry professionals attended looking for the newest products and technologies available to increase productivity, reduce costs and improve quality.
Over 150 companies exhibited the latest solutions available from automated assembly systems, workstations, adhesives and fasteners, to wire processing, robots and motion control devices. The exhibition floor was a marketplace for the assembly community with top suppliers including Bosch Rexroth, Cox Automation, and Schleuniger. "Assembly East is the most convenient way to compare equipment in the East," said attendee Jonathan Mann of Allegis Corporation of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. First time exhibitor, Greg Hollows of Edmund Industrial Optics was happy with the event and indicated that he planned to put more money into tradeshows. "The chance of seeing 25 people in an hour versus seeing 25 people in a week," cemented his outstanding two show days.
In conjunction with the exhibition was an impressive cutting-edge educational conference produced in part by leading industry associations: the Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and the Edison Welding Institute (EWI). Popular sessions covered hot topics such as Lean Productivity Systems, Quick and Continuous Improvement Through a Kaizen Blitz, Solder Joint Reliability of BGA Assemblies, and Work Cell Design.
"I believe that the strong turnout of qualified attendees with purchasing agendas is a good sign not only for this region but for the whole country," said Kel Marsden-Kish, Industry Vice President for the Assembly family of events, produced by Reed Exhibitions. "The performance of an event's conference can also be a good indicator of how the industry is trending. This year's Assembly East conference was up more than 150% over the previous year and I take that as a very positive sign."
One of the highlights of the event included a keynote presentation by George Szekely, General Manager, Automation Group from industry bellwether, Tyco Electronics. His speech, "Assembly Automation in a Rebounding Economy," provided insights into issues relevant to both users and providers of assembly automation solutions. Reasonable solutions balancing three major factors; Human Resources, Automation Deployment, and Finance were outlined.
Another well-attended event was the ASSEMBLY Magazine Panel Discussion, "The Profits and Perils of Assembly Cells." ASSEMBLY Senior Editor, John Sprovieri, moderated a panel of representatives from five leading regional manufacturers on the pros and cons of the assembly cells manufacturing strategy.
