Alternate Solders/methods of flex attachment to pcb's | 21 March, 2006

hi all,

could someone have an idea, would it be the best method to attach a flex cable to a pcb.

right now, we are using a hot bar to solder the flex to the pcb, but we are having troubles with this method.

the process is no regular all the time and we have short inside the flex.

any idea could help. thanks.

Omar: I dealt with this so called "hot bar" process also, and you're right; it's neither reliable nor repeatable. The goal was to attach a flex LCD display to another flex circuit. The flex LCD was constructed of resin and conductive silver particles where the intent was to "hot bar" solder it. As you probably know, hot bar soldering uses time, heat, and pressure to form your bond by coalescing the resin and conductive particles. The problem we had was cracked traces and misalignments. The cracked traces, however, probably had more to do with the product design. The circuit was bent in its mechanical package and far exceeded its bend radius tolerance. Luckily I'm not part of this project anymore.
