Reflow Oven Chains | 9 August, 2006

We have an OmniFlo 7, 2000 vintage reflow. We are having conveyor problems. I checked the encoder and speed control board and everything is good per tech. manual operations. We removed the chains a couple months ago and thoroughly soaked/cleaned them and it seemed to help for a few weeks but it's getting problematic again (so soon!). We are having to oil them often. Is it common to completely replace the chains on a reflow oven of this vintage? Any other things I should be trying?

We had to replace the chains on our Omni as well. We used a non-approved oil which build up so much carbon the links would not move. Since using the high temp oil they recommend, no problems.

I had a similar problem once. It turned out to be sprocket bearings. The sprocket was so hard to turn, the chain would stop a couple times per shift.

Swag, I think I have mentioned this on the forums before....The only way to truly get those chains clean is to use a foaming oven cleaner. It requires several applications to get them completely clean.

Also, you need to remove the tracks and clean them as well. I do not use oven cleaner on the tracks because they are aluminum. Use a strong bristle tooth brush and a cleaner like castrol super clean.

We have never had to replace the chains on our OMNI.

We use the Tribol 930/100 Synthetic oil. Also, check the drive motor chain on the output end of the oven. I have seen the set screws back out of the drive gears, and it will kind of pop at times while running.

Great advice, all. Thanks much. I called on the Tribol 930 and there is now a blend called Tribol 1421 that is good for higher temps. Speedline recommends in place of 930 if you wish to do so. Might be something to consider for lead free stuff.

Good Morning SWAG,

We have had similar problems with our Heller 1800 EXL's when the chains would build up oil and debris. The only way we could get them clean was to put them into a self cleaning oven and carbonize the residues. We then rinsed them off using a pressure washer and re-oiled before reinstalling them. They seem to be fine for about 1 1/2 to 2 years before cleaning is required again.

You need to find out what Speedline recomends for lubrication and use it (chain oil and screw shafts). Don't try to be clever or cheap by second sourcing your own concoction.

Currently I am using:

Tribol for the chain Krytox for the screw shaft

When we had problems on our Omni 5 with fluctuating chain speed, the problem turned out to be the Dart speed control board. After replacing the board the problem went away.

Speedline (800) 737-8110 sells it in 500 ml qtys. I'm trying to find some in larger, cheaper qtys. but no luck yet. I believe it's a Castrol Industrial product for starters.

I think the 1 gallon was about $140, I dunno about the 5 gallon though
