There is a Quad 1000 in eBay stores, but I can't get much info on what a Quad 1000 can or can't do. It appears to be a "chip shooter", but can it do 0805 passives, too? Does it need an option to do those? Does the 1000 have some form of optical centering and/or alignment, or is it totally machanical? Most of my stuff doesn't need optical, but I do a few parts with .65 and .5 mm pitch. I could keep doing those manually.

I am a VERY small OEM, and would just like to keep this all in house if a low-cost used machine can do it. The problem with contract assemblers is they are VERY expensive for short runs, and I can't afford the parts for a 1000-piece run of these boards. I have even toyed with building my own P&P machine, so I can probably fix anything that goes wrong, if I can get manuals.

The quad 1000 is best used for 0805 parts and larger. It is termed a chip shooter meaning 'for the most part' passives only. There is no optical alignment and it has mechanical centering using precisor pads. Fiducial finding is done with a beam and not a camera....so....fine pitch is out of the question. All the programming is manually taught. This is a very old machine and isnt worth tooooooo much. Support will be dificult to find but i can probably help you with most problems.If its used for passives only....the machine should run good.

It appears that he has the quantity of feeders it holds listed as how many feeders come with it. I dont think that machine is worth $1,250.00. You will spend a lot on feeders since you can still use them on newer quads. I sold about 20 of them last year that were over 10 years old for about $300/each. May want to find some feeders before you buy. You can probably get a Quad 4C pretty cheap these days, that would be a better machine. You might want to look at a Philips 84-vz. Since the feeders wont work on the next generation you should be able to get one with a ton of feeders for under $10,000.00. I think I might actaully know where a couple are if your interested. No, I am not a broker. If you can I would really try to get something newer as the technology has come soooooo far you will be way better off. Are you running the same jobs all the time or will you have to do a lot of programming? You really should have no problem finding a contractor to do lower runs without raping you. Most of our volumes are between 30 to 250 pcs.

The ad is confusing. He has NO feeders! That certainly reduces the value of the machine. Now that I know the general capability of the machine, I'm inclined not to go for it. With shipping, feeders, possible repairs, etc. it could be real expensive to get this machine running.

I'm looking for a small, low-speed entry-level machine that I can maintain myself, at least up to a point. Although I probably won't go much smaller than 0805 on the passives, I do have a number of chips with .65 and .5 mm lead pitch. So, any suggestions would be welcome.

I would appreciate any pointers to smaller machines that are newer and more flexible (vision, mostly). I am a one-man manufacturer, and have been doing all boards by hand so far. So, my budget on this is pretty small, but I understand that getting a machine for $1250 is just the START of the spending. I have 9 different boards I make now, and may add a few more. I would probably be making very small batches of these boards, like 50 at a time.

How about Mydata? They are a great start-up machine. Easy to run and you don't need full reels to place parts. You can "make" you own trays to hold parts as well. Plus the price for a used one isn't all that high.

Mydata would be good, Contact Systems would be good for what you are doing, very good software, crappy feeders but fine for 0805 parts. You may be able to get a Universal GSM pretty cheap these days. If you make a decision then look for a machine you will be at a disadvantage. Best to keep an eye on e-bay and see what comes up and then do your research to see if it will work. Do you have an oven? You can get away with hand stenciling at those volumes. We are a contract manufacturer and did all stenciling by hand for the first three years we were in business.
