We're contemplating getting into BGA placement with a couple of customers, which means I'm contemplating purchasing BGA rework equipment. Currently in the research phase.

My question, at this point...when reworking a BGA (say, a solder short post reflow that needs to be removed), is it a necessity to re-ball the bga? This may sound like a bone-head question; but it just struck me as a possibility, and I figured I'd get some more info about it.

No, you can simply replace the bad BGA with a new one. If this is a one of kind BGA and you must use it, then you need to get it reballed.
