Mass Lead Trimming of Clinched Leads | 10 May, 2007

We have a board that requires a .015 - .035" finished lead length which requires us to do mass lead trimming. To this point we've performed this activity on parts with straight leads.

We're looking at going to an axial auto-insertion process (outsourced) for this board where we'd be in a position to need to clip clinched leads. I'm picturing leads getting bent over and not clipped.

Does anyone have experience doing this? Is it possible to setup the clinch angle to provide the best chance at successful clipping? Is this the worst idea ever conceived?

Q1. Does anyone have experience doing this? A1. Typically, assemblers cut and clinch components during the autoinsertion process. OR if manually inserted, cut and formed prior to insertion, so the component is snapped into place during assembly with the lead trimmed to the proper length. Q2. Is it possible to setup the clinch angle to provide the best chance at successful clipping? A2. Sure. Generally, those mass trimming clinch at a very slight angle Q3. Is this the worst idea ever conceived? A3. No. Some of our troop ran plastic bags from the dry cleaner through the reflow oven, which melted the bags and bonded them to the conveyor. [Beat that!]

On some of our boards we cut the clinched leads with an old Q Corp cutter. Works fine as long as the blade is sharp and the lead isnt bent against the board. Youll know when you go to far on the clinch because the mass lead cutter will begin to start "smearing" the leads instead of a clean cut.

It is possible to vary the length of lead during auto insert. However, it requires software and mechanical adjustments. Universal equipment allows small changes via software program for lead length. To change angle of clinch involves a mechanical adjustment. We have done from flat (spacing violation if not designed carefully) to 45-60 degrees. Our typical height measure using auto insert range from 0.020" to 0.040" for 1/4w resistors and is dependent on lead thickess.
