0402 Placement

0402 Placement | 7 January, 2008

In the next couple of weeks I will be attempting to place 0402's and 0603's using a Quad QSA-30.

I am a little nervous as I have heard along the grapevine that the machine struggles in placing the smaller components as they float around in the pocket of the tape...

I would apprecaite it if anybody out there could offer any kind of advice on placing these components using the QSA or any general advice on placing smaller comps.

Cheers...

Picking the 0402 is very important- correct picking will facilitate correct placing. The quality of the feeder is key. I am not familiar with the QSA, but feeder quality is important for all picking 0402 and 0201 components.

Hopefully you dont have a lot of 0402 placements. You must have 'quality' feeder/feeders for the 0402 parts. You then should limit the picking to 1 head for those parts. Do this by assigning only 1 xf nozzle in your program.

oh....Straight z-rods with good springs are a plus...

Good luck Bob

I would suggest accepting components only in paper tape. I have had better luck with 0402s in punched paper over plastic embossed tape. You can also pick with oversized nozzles if your vision system does not give you trouble with seeing the nozzle. Oversized nozzles might give you some extra slop at pickup but could also hurt you at placement on the PCB if the components are close enough that the nozzle hits prior placed components.
