Hi folks,

I'm looking your opinion on the quality of this component. It is an 0603 inductor made by EPCOS, B824496C. We are finding that it has a tendency to partially tombstone. I was thinking that the coating extending out on to the terminations could be a potential cause for this fault.

Any thoughts or comments!

Even though we can't comment on that specific part, you're correct. If the solderability protection on the terminations is not symetrical, it could result in tombstoning. We used to see this alot in smaller components, where the plating did not completely cover one of the terminations.

Also plating type can be an issue have seen trouble with silver paladium parts made be EPCOS (Varistors) in past in LF soldering....
